Lucy Calkin's Reader's WorkshopHere at Clay Lamberton, we place a great emphasis on reading. If a child struggles as a reader, it greatly impacts his or her ability to be successful in other academic areas. Because of this, it is important for children to be active readers inside and outside of school.
In fifth grade, students participate in the Lucy Calkin's Reading Workshop Model. During this model students participate in a 10-15 minute lesson which is followed by reading time. Reading time lasts approximately 60 minutes, and it is during this time where the following will occur: conferring, mid-workshop teaching point, strategy and/or guided reading groups, and independent reading (as well as instructional aid one-on-one reading). At the end of the lesson, students will share their reading responses for 2-3 minutes. On a daily basis, students will manage themselves as readers so that they read for long periods of time, fill out their in-class reading log, and respond to their reading through written work. At the beginning of the school year, teachers will provide a reading expectations anchor chart so the students should know what is expected of them throughout the reading class period. For each reading unit, there will be a pre on-demand and post on-demand so that students can see how they have grown as readers. These will consist of reading prompts and responses. The units that will be addressed this year are: Interpretation Book Clubs, Reading Like a Fan, Argument and Advocacy, Tackling Complexity, and Fantasy Book Clubs. By the end of fifth grade, it is our goal to have students reading at a level V on the Guided Reading scale. |
