Writing with Lucy CalkinsIn fifth grade, students participate in the Lucy Calkin's Writing Workshop Model. Within this workshop, students participate in a 10-15 minute lesson. This is followed by writing time where students utilize the information they learned to enhance their writing. The individual writing time lasts approximately 25 minutes. While students participate in individual writing, conferring and mid-workshop teaching points will also be conducted. At the end of the lesson, students will share their writing work with their writing partner(s).
On a daily basis, students will manage themselves as writers so that they can write fast and furious for long periods of time. A pre on-demand and post on-demand will be given each unit so that students can see their growth as writers. The following units are occurring this school year: Personal Narrative, Literary Essay, Research-Based Argumentative Essay, Research Reports, Letter Writing, and Fantasy Stories. The goal of this program is for students to transfer what they learn in one piece of writing to their future pieces. Through this program, we hope that students will develop a strong love of writing. |
