Science and Social Studies
Throughout the year, fifth graders will be exploring many topics in the academic areas of science and social studies. In the areas of science, students will be exploring computer science (coding), states of matter, and earth's ecosystems, whereas in the area of social studies, students will be exploring U.S. Regions, U.S. Government, and U.S. War conflicts. This year, students will create a variety of projects. A project motivates students to gain knowledge, and they retain the content knowledge longer. Projects give students the chance to apply the skills they learn in school to relevant and real-world situations. Students will also learn skills such as how to think critically, solve problems, work in teams, and make presentations. In addition, students will learn about growth mindset. These skills will help students succeed in the future, both in school and in today’s work world.
Part of Science and Social Studies involves students showcasing their work. Therefore, there will be three Showcase Nights throughout the school year where we invite family and the community in so that students to teach those around them about what they learned about the concept at hand. At Showcase Night, students are required to attend in order to present their final project product. It is a time to see the learning process that took place prior to the final product. This time is extremely important for students because they are able to show what they have learned over the last several weeks. As a parent/guardian, we would really appreciate if you and your child make Showcase Night a priority. We will send out several reminders as the school year goes on.
